Searching for Natural, Sustainable & Organic Fabrics?
Now you can have these fabrics at your fingertips to utilize effectively in your projects. There seems to be much misunderstanding about those three terms, Natural, Sustainable and Organic when it comes to fabric. "Natural fiber fabric simply refers to fabrics made from fibers found in nature. Many natural fabers may have been grown and manufacturered without harmful toxins, but there are no certifying organizations to label them "organic." That includes hemp, silk and linen. "Sustainable" fabrics can be natural, organic, or from recycled content. Certified "Organic" fabric is third-party certified to be grown and manufactured without toxic chemicals.
Natural fibers fall into three main groups:
Vegetable fibers which come from plants such as cotton, hemp, and flax;
Protein fibers such as wool, alpaca, and cashmere which come from the wool and hair of animals;
Strong elastic fibrous secretion of silkworm larvae in cocoons which are used to create silk.
The use of natural fibers extends back beyond recorded history with archaeological evidence indicating that the interlacing of plant fibers what we call weaving dates back 12,000 years to the Neolithic times. And prior to 5,000 B.C., experimentation with other natural materials produced the first basic woven fabrics and cloths consisting of plant fibers from hemp, flax and animal fibers such as wool.
Now, as the French say, "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose." Which means, 'the more things change, the more they stay the same.' Natural fabrics are more popular than ever and you can easily obtain Sustainable and Organic Fabrics for upholstery, windows and accessories.
